Our Hole-y Team
So I was looking at our team yesterday, and we seriously have a ton of holes. I feel like guys are slipping out of our hands so fast that we can’t catch them all and they’re leaving us completely empty.
Who have we lost this offseason already? Adrian Gonzalez to the Red Sox, Yorvit Torrealba to the Rangers, Miguel Tejada to the Giants, Kevin Correia to the Pirates, and now Tony Gwynn Jr. to the Dodgers. Plus we lost Chris Young. Our roster is looking awfully thin right now.
But we have signed pitcher Aaron Harang, and we’re about to sign Dustin Moseley, who is also a pitcher. So now our rotation looks like…Mat Latos, Harang, Clayton Richard, Moseley, and Wade LeBlanc or Tim Stauffer. I don’t know. It might work, but it seems like a very unstable rotation.
Well, I guess we’ll have to see how things pan out. We’ve still got a ton of offseason left (waaaaaa), so we have a lot of time to pull a team together.
In other news, the Latest Leaders list on MLBlogs.com came out for the month of November. This blog is #5 of all fan blogs!!! I’m sooooo excited!! I think I was #5 a couple months ago, but 5 is my absolute favorite number and I’m so excited to get it again.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, to all of you for reading this blog. It’s so much fun to know that you guys are reading so much that you’re putting this blog in the top 5 of all fan blogs. I can’t thank you enough!

Sigh…offseason…sigh…
I hate the offseason.
It’s been so sad without Padres baseball. I couldn’t even watch the playoffs with more than a passing interest because the Padres weren’t in it. I am extremely mad that the Giants won the World Series!!!!! It is just so wrong. When you think about the fact that the Padres were in first place like 97% of the season, and the Giants just came out of nowhere and snatched the NL West from us right at the last second…oh my goodness. It just drives me nuts. Even worse that the Giants won the whole thing. Man, that was our spot. We were the ones who should have been there. Oh man it is so frustrating and heartbreaking.
But anyways, things have been pretty sad around here after the World Series ended. Chris Young, after five years with the Padres, has become a free agent and the Padres aren’t showing too much interest in getting him back. I love Chris so much!
Even though he’s been of little use to us in the past few years, I still feel like he’s one of the all-time Padres. He’s been here so super long, and when he was good, he really did have a big impact on our club. Thank you so much for all the great times, Chris, and no matter where you go, I hope you’ll be able to play the game you love.
Also, Yorvit Torrealba had become a free agent, and will not come back because he wants a multi-year contract and the Padres are not going to give him that. I can’t help but think that this is seriously going to hurt us next year. Yorvit was such an essential part of our success this year. I honestly don’t think we would have gotten close as we had without him.
Plus, our catching situation has not been that great at all. Sure, we’ve got Nick Hundley, but he’s been up here for a few years, and not much to show for it. I don’t trust him as an everyday catcher, mostly because of his offense. I know that catchers aren’t supposed to be that great offensively, but still. Nick is really going to have to step it up.
Hopefully the Padres will be able to pick up a good catcher for the season though. But I don’t know about you, but I’m getting kind of tired of the whole pick-up-a-veteran-catcher-for-one-year thing. I think it’s about time we find a guy who can be a long-time catcher for us. I think the pitchers deserve to have a guy will be consistently there from year to year instead of having to get to know a new guy every single season.
Jon Garland has also filed for free agency. I believe that Jerry Hairston Jr., too has become a free agent, but he’s very interested in returning to the Padres.
I have a feeling that there’s going to be a lot of change to this Padre team over the offseason. Hopefully it won’t be too bad, but still.
We also picked up Adrian Gonzalez’ option for 2011, but Jed Hoyer said that he will most likely become a free agent after 2011. Sigh.
Well, one super fun thing that I’ve done this offseason was attending “Unashamed: The Movement” in Long Beach. It’s a group of Christian rappers who are touring the United States right now, including Lecrae, Trip Lee, Tedashii, and Sho Baraka. It was an amazingly fun concert for me because Lecrae is one of my all-time favorite artists ever. (yes, I know that’s redundant) Seriously, if they come to your town, go see them. Still In It
Man, this weekend was tough! I had a feeling that the series against the Cardinals was going to be a battle, but I didn’t realize just how bad it was really going to be. I guess that even though the Cards are not doing so great right now, they will always, always do great against the Padres. Just one of those bizarre baseball things.
Not going to lie, I think we really needed two of those games instead of just one. We were able to get back into first place for approximately a few hours, and we’re only half a game behind. It could have been a lot worse. But man, we’ve got to pull ourselves together. We can’t afford to be losing series like this.
We’ve got 13 games left in the regular season. 13!!! That’s barely anything, but if things keep going the way they have been lately, it’s going to be a battle all the way to the end. I’m sooo nervous!!!
I am counting on beating the Dodgers for the next three games. We ABSOLUTELY have to get at least two out of three. Preferably. Failure is not an option. It’s just gotta happen.
A huge positive from this weekend was Chris Young’s performance on Saturday. He only threw four innings, but he didn’t allow anything but a run and three hits. He threw 69 pitches, 41 for strikes. Most of them were fastballs too, but he was effective. Congrats CY!!
I just wanted to take a quick look at the ERAs of some of the guys in the bullpen. Our entire pitching staff is an overall 3.46, which is second in the Major Leagues, only behind the Giants by 0.01 points.
Joe Thatcher’s ERA is 1.32, which is second only to Chris Young’s 0.90 (haha). Joe’s thrown in 59 games.
Next is Mike Adams with a 1.82. He’s thrown in 62 games, but he has significantly more innings than Thatcher.
Heath Bell has a 1.87, which is great for a closer. He’s got 42 saves!
Ernesto Frieri is a 1.95, but he’s only thrown in 29 games.
Ryan Webb goes up to 2.95, but he’s only been in 48 games, while the guys in the 1.00’s have thrown a lot more.
Edward Mujica is 3.44. But Luke Gregerson is a 3.49, which is eh. He’s actually thrown more innings than anyone in the bullpen, though, so maybe he’s excused.
I just thought it was interesting how good some of these guys are by the numbers. Like Adams and Bell have been extremely instrumental. Gregerson too, but he seems to be slipping a little lately.
Well, I don’t you about you, but I still believe in this team. This division is absolutely crazy right now, but we’re still in it and I believe that we’ll be in the playoffs in a few weeks. Stick with them. They’re going to pull through.

Hanging On!!!
I TOLD YOU THIS WAS GOING TO BE CRAZY!!!!!!
Seriously, last night’s game was a nightmare. I could not believe it. I was madder than I’ve been all year. I’m glad that you all couldn’t hear me, ’cause it was pretty ugly. I’ve never screamed at my computer so much in my life.
I’m not very happy with Mat Latos right now. I mean, goodness, he picked a great time of the season to suddenly have this huge meltdown. We NEED him right now. We need him to be that dominating CY Young candidate he was a few weeks ago.
Well anyways, I was like, this is absolutely ridiculous. It’s 8-2 in the bottom of the second. I was soooo upset, but man, we still had seven whole innings left. Unfortunately, the pitching totally imploded and the final score was 14-4. We didn’t even have a chance.
So there’s another problem: the pitching. It’s been incredibly dominant all season and we CANNOT LOSE IT NOW. If we don’t have our solid bullpen, we’re done. There’s no way we can win without our pitching.
We wouldn’t be where we are today if we didn’t have the kind of pitching we had all year. But now I’m really worried. Of course, we take things one game at a time, and today’s game is really worrying me. We’ve got Chris Young starting, right? He hasn’t pitched in the majors since April, and he’s coming off of a pretty major injury. I don’t think he’ll be able to go more than five innings, maybe 80-90 pitches. Even if he was pitching incredibly, I don’t think the pitching staff would risk him getting injured again.
So say he comes out in the fifth. That leaves four full innings that the bullpen has to take care of. Last night we used Latos, Correia, LeBlanc, and Mujica, so the rest of the guys should be well rested, but still. We absolutely need to win this game today, and those guys are going to have to hold it together.
Though last night’s game was a huge blow to the team and to the fans, we really got of easy. It was absolutely amazing to look at the standings this morning and to see that we still only .5 games behind. What a relief!! We are totally still in this thing, and though it’s been crazy, I think we’re still going to win the West.
HUGE thanks to Randy Wolf of the Brewers. I don’t know what we would have done without him. He threw an incredible game against the Giants last night: nine innings, three hits, no runs, six strikeouts. Wow. Thank you thank you thank you Randy!!!!
Guys, we need this game. I just cannot emphasize how much we need to win this game. We need to get back in first place where we belong. I know you can do it. My goodness, you’ve been proving it to us all year. Get out there, get some big hits, and win. Simple as that.
I love you guys so much.

Buckle Up
I do not appreciate being shoved out of first place. It’s rather rude of the Giants to do such a thing to us. After all, we’ve been leading practically all year. We cannot and will not let it slip out of our hands now.
But man, I’ve got to give credit to the guys for the amazing job they’ve done this season. I don’t think we’ve ever seen a Padres team quite like this and they’ve been so much fun to watch. Though we’ve lost first place for the day, I have the ultimate confidence in my boys. They’re not going to let the Giants take over first place, not after all this time.
We’ve got three more games against the Cards. Starting pitchers: Mat Latos, CHRIS YOUNG!!!!!!, and Jon Garland. Look good? The Cardinals have always had our number, but they’re seven games behind the Reds in the NL Central. As long as our pitching holds things together, I think we can get these next three games.
Mat Latos wasn’t the greatest last time out, but he’s been so amazing all season, I have no doubt that he’ll bounce back and pitch an incredible game tonight.
Then CHRIS YOUNG!!!!!!!!! is pitching on Saturday!!!!!!! I’M SOOOOOO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!! It seems like forever since he’s been okay to pitch. I hate how hurt he’s been, it’s so sad!! I’m just so happy that he’ll be able to help us out during the stretch. On Saturday, I don’t think we can expect any more than five solid innings, so the bullpen will have to be seriously on their game. But I mean, wow, it’ll just be amazing to have Chris pitching in a major league game. Welcome back, Chris. You have been missed.
Being in second place stinks, but seriously, we’ll get out of this. After St. Louis, we’re going to LA to face the Dodgers. They’re 11 games behind, and five games away from being eliminated. Plus, they totally failed on beating the Giants. If they can’t beat the Giants, they can’t beat us. We’re really, really going to need that series.
Can you believe that after this Cardinals series, there are only going to be FOUR more series in the regular season? Talk about coming down to the wire. Oh my goodness. The next few weeks are going to be CRAAAAZY.
We’ve got 16 games to get back our first-place lead and hold it. I sure hope you guys are all buckled in, because this is going to be one crazy ride.

Time for a Win!!
Alright, we have a problem. Now that all the All-Star stuff is taken care of (Heath’s going…WHOO HOOO!!), we need to focus on the real goal: winning! Which we have not been doing against the Nationals. I think that absolutely stinks.
They are the Nationals. We are the first-place Padres. Do you see the problem here? The first-place Padres should have won the first two games of this series, but they didn’t. No, who won the first two games of the series were the last-place Nationals. Not good at all.
I don’t know what happened, really, but it seems to me like our pitching gave up a bunch of home runs. I think we gave up like four last night. We did hit three of our own, but still.
I don’t like to go into the details of losses like this, so I’m not, other to say that whatever wasn’t going right for the boys these past two days, they’d better get it going tonight. We’ve got a win to get.
We are one game away from getting our 50th win of the season. It’s about time that we get it.
So how are my boys doing, really? I just realized that I haven’t really talked about what’s going on with the players in a long time. I found out today that the Young family is about to have their second child, a boy. I haven’t heard any news from Chris in so long, and this is great news. Congrats to the Youngs!
More good news on Chris’ side. His throwing session yesterday went really well, so maybe, we’ll be able to see Chris out there on the mound sometime before the season ends.
Heath Bell is going to the All-Star game as a replacement for some guy from the Brewers. I am so happy! I’m sorry to say it, but I don’t know if we would have been able to get him there with the vote. We did put in a ton of votes for him and a lot of hard work, and we’ve been rewarded. I’m so happy for Heath! We need someone there to represent our amazing pitching staff, and who better than Heath Bell? I know he’s going to have a great time. Congrats Heath!
Tonight we’ve got Mat Latos going out there. He’d better have a great game! We really, really need to end this first half on a good note. How ’bout a sweep of the Rockies over the weekend? That would be great.

Not What I Expected
It’s been a week since the season started, and so far, I have not seen what I expected from this Padres team. I guess I’m really learning the lesson that the spring doesn’t tell you anything about what the regular season is going to look like. So far, that’s very true for the Padres.
In the spring, we were hitting, running, pitching, dominating, and winning. But in the first six games of the season, I have seen almost nothing of that. It’s very disappointing, and I have to admit that I thought we were going to be much better than this. Maybe I was biased and too hopeful, but just as you can’t judge a regular season by spring training, I believe that you can’t judge a regular season by its first few games. So I’ve still got a lot of hope for this team.
We’ve only stolen four bases. We’ve struck out 56 times, which leads the majors. Our team batting average is .218. Not good. Not good at all.
We’ve had two excellent wins. I mean, not every game is perfect, but both of those wins were amazing. On Saturday, we won against Colorado in 14 innings. I guess that a 2-4 record against division rivals isn’t that bad, but it’s not what I expected at all.
There’s something extremely essential to every baseball game, and that’s the starting pitching. So far, our starting pitching has been very iffy. We’ve allowed 11 home runs, which is second only to the Angels, who have given up 12. Jon Garland’s had two starts, and he’s only gone ten innings, allowed six runs, and he’s 0-2.
In Kevin Correia’s first start, he went six innings, but he allowed four runs and is 0-1.
Clayton Richard’s 0-1. Mat Latos allowed four runs in six innings. Chris Young is the only starter with a really quality start this season, and guess what? Saddest news I’ve heard about this team in a long time, but Chris is going on the DL. Again. Again. Again. ARGH!!!
This makes me soooo sad. I was so thrilled about CY’s incredible start last week, and I am totally depressed that he’s back there again. I’m sick of having him on the DL. I’m sure that he’s very sick of it, too. But it’s gotta be so unbelievably frustrating. I know it is for me. This guy can pitch so well, we saw that last week, but he just can’t see to catch a break and stay heathy!!! It’s so awful. Sigh. Well, I really, really hope that he’ll be fine after this and will be able to come back as quickly as possible. Get well soon, Chris. We miss you already.
So CY was supposed to be starting this afternoon’s home opener, but that’s obviously not going to happen, so Kevin Correia is taking his place. That shouldn’t be a problem, just as long as he can hang in there for a long time without giving up anything.
I don’t know what our problem was last week. Granted, we were faced up against some pitchers who were absolutely unhittable. But why can’t our pitchers be like that? Why aren’t they the ones shutting down the other team’s hitters? Maybe it was because we were not at home. Maybe we’re just adjusting to real games. I don’t know what it was, but it’s gotta change ASAP.
But on the other hand, I don’t believe that these few games can tell us how the rest of the season’s going to be. Baseball is way to fickle for that. Who knows? We could be like this all season. We could have a turnaround and be winning two out of every three instead of only one out of three. We could have a long losing streak or a long winning streak. We just don’t know what’s going to happen, and it’s very likely that we’ll go through both extremes.
We have absolutely no idea what’s going to happen this season. Isn’t that amazing? If we didn’t have that uncertainty, baseball would be incredibly boring. But we’ve got that unknown, so it keeps us watching. We see teams come out of nowhere and win big time. We see the biggest and the best teams have complete meltdowns.
Frankly, I don’t think we’ll really know what’s going to happen with the Padres until the last week of the season. Then we’ll be completely sure that we’re either going to have another average season or we’re going to the playoffs. This team is going to keep me guessing all season long. I just hope that we’ll be winning most of that time.
Today is Opening Day. Sure, I know it was officially a week ago, but this is really it. We unfortunately had to start the season on the road, but this is really the beginning, right here in San Diego. Every series is a new beginning.
I wanted to say a few words about Trevor Hoffman. As I’m sure a lot of you know, he’s on the quest for 600 saves. Can I just say that it’s a huge shame that he’s not with the Padres right now? Just think of the publicity the Padres and San Diego would be getting. I think the front office should trade for him right away. Just think of the headlines.
Also, Trev’s blown two games in a row, and the Brewers seem to be getting a little worried. I think that’s even more reason to get him over here now. Of course, the manager said that he’s going to use Trevor ’cause Trevor’s his closer, but they always say that just because he’s Trevor. So, I think that the Brewers should get him off their backs so they don’t have to worry about him blowing games for them. Why not send him back to where they got him from?
I really really really really really really miss Trevor!!! And I still think that the front office were complete idiots to get rid of him. Grrrrrrrr.
Well, the game’s starting in about two hours!! I’m super excited!! We’d better get a big win.

That’s More Like It
We saw a great Padres team during Spring Training. Somehow, that team got left behind on Opening Day. But thankfully, they got here last night! That dominant-pitching, base-stealing, agressive-hitting, stunning-defense team that we watched in Spring Training has arrived.
Seriously, it was a huge relief to watch these guys play last night. They had me a little worried there after Opening Day, but I think everything’s going to be okay.
A huge part of the success of this game was the pitching performance by Chris Young. Did you know that this guy hadn’t started a game since June of last year? Anyways, he threw six incredibly solid innings. He threw a one-hitter with three walks and five strikeouts. Man he was solid. That was the Chris Young that we saw in 2007. He’s been plagued by injuries for the past few seasons, but I think he’s really back. And that’s HUGE news for the Padres. It’s just huge. Amazing outing by CY last night.
Another big part of this game was Everth Cabrera. In the top of the second, he hit a two-run double to break open the game.
Then Will Venable hit a solo homer in the top of the fourth. That kid has soo much power!
In the top of the sixth, Everth did it again. This time he hit a two-run triple to extend our lead to 5-0. He finished the game with three hits and four RBIs.
CY was pulled after only 86 pitches, so the bullpen came in and made things interesting. Luke Gregerson came in and gave up three runs. Not good. Then Cesar Ramos and Mike Adams came in and they did fine.
So we went into the top of the ninth with a 5-3 lead, and I was already thinking about getting some insurance for Heath. Yeah, I know, he did great last year, but he made it interesting enough to make me nervous even with a two-run lead. So I was thrilled when Adrian Gonzalez hit his second home run of the year in as many nights.
ADRIAN’S SOOO AMAZING!!! I just think it’s soooo cool that he’s already got two home runs and we’ve only played two games. Man he’s amazing.
We got our extra insurance run, and Heath Bell came in to try to save his first game of the year. He did make things interesting, as usual, which was actually caused by his defense, but then they redeemed themselves by turning a double play behind him. He struck out the last batter to finish of the game.
Huge sigh of relief. That game was amazing, and soooo much better than the game before. I’m so thrilled that we were able to play so amazingly last night.
By the way, we stole three bases last night. It was really cool to see all that during the spring, but even better to know that it’s actually going to happen in the regular season.
Tonight we’re wrapping up this series with the D’backs. Kevin Correia will be starting for the Padres. YAY!!

Starting Off With a Loss!
Oh my goodness, it’s so great to back into writing about an actual game. Whew. I can’t believe we finally made it!
Today was the charity game against the Mariners, which we lost 9-3. A couple of observations right out of the gate: 1) I forgot how much I hate losing. And I always run into this problem in Spring Training too even though these games don’t matter. I mean, I am really frustrated that we lost this game. I don’t know, even though they don’t matter, these games still seem to have implications for the regular season.
2) Along those same lines, I hate Spring Training because I always thought that the pitchers were supposed to be trying to get on their game, so they’re not on top of their game, yet. But every single year, our pitchers are certainly not on top of their game, but it always seems like the opposing pitchers are having no problems at all. Which leads me to think that even if the opposing pitchers are not on top of their game yet, it must mean that our hitters stink. So, in summary, Spring Training games really tick me off. And I know, I’m really, really reading too much into this.
Postives? Chris Young had a good outing, an inning with three hits and a run and a walk allowed. Did get two strikeouts though, so that puts his ERA at 9.00 even. Sweet.
Heath Bell allowed a run, and this Radhames Liz guy allowed six. Nice.
Matt Stairs hit a home run, and Kyle Blanks got two hits. Jerry Hairston got a hit and scored a run.
Okay, so it wasn’t too bad for a game that doesn’t even count. And it is baseball, after all. That’s something to be excited about. But I want to see our guys getting some more hits and scoring some more runs. I hate losing.
Speaking of which, the Oakland Athetics also lost 9-3. Kouz didn’t play, so I guess he’s still hurting. Poor baby 😦 Get well soon!!
I can’t wait to hear tomorrow’s game live! It’s going to be so great!

New Year = New Hope
Happy New Year everyone! Can you believe that it’s 2010 already? I certainly can’t. It’s unbelievable how fast the time is going by!
But I’m super excited about a new year, which means a new season of Padres baseball! Let’s see, it’s been about three months since I got to listen to a Padres game. It doesn’t seem like much, but it has been a really long time! On the bright side, we have just over a month until pitchers anc catchers report. This season is going to be here before we know it!
I would like to look at the team as it stands right now. I know we’ll probably make a few more moves before Opening Day, but as of right now, what does the team look like?
Pitching: I think we’re definitely going to have to add at least one more veteran guy to this rotation. Right now, we’ve got Kevin Correia, Mat Latos, Wade LeBlanc, Clayton Richard, and Chris Young in contention for the rotation, among others. Oh dear, I hope so much that CY will be able to stay healthy all year. I miss him sooo much!! These are all great guys, and great pitchers as well. That said, most of them are very young. If the Padres add a veteran pitcher or two, I think we can take that as a sign that some of these guys are going to be in the minors for the first half of the season. Latos, LeBlanc, Richard, are amazing pitchers, but there’s room to grow. I think that the Padres are going to try to get some more starting pitchers before Spring Training.
I think the bullpen is good to go, though. Sure, you can never have enough pitching, but we have a great group of guys out there right now: Mike Adams, Greg Burke, Mike Ekstrom, Luke Gregerson, Edward Mujica, Joe Thatcher, Ryan Webb, plus the closer, Heath Bell. I don’t think we’ll have too much of a problem with finding guys for that bullpen.
Catching: Catching is one of the biggest gaps that I see on this team right now. We only have Nick Hundley and Dusty Ryan on the roster right now, both very young guys. I’m still not sure how the Padres are going to sort out this position, but my best bet would be that they sign a veteran catcher. It would make a lot of sense. So, we definitely need a little help on the catching side.
Infield: I think we’re very well covered in the infield: we’ve got Adrian Gonzalez, David Eckstein, Everth Cabrera, and Kevin Kouzmanoff. All four are phenomenal defensive players, and they’re a blast the watch. You’ve got a two-time Gold Glove winner in Adrian Gonzalez. A veteran guy in Eck. A young, but excellent guy in Everth. Plus an almost-Gold-Glove winner in Kouz. I feel very safe with this infield. They’re amazing!
Outfield: Like Hyun Young said, this outfield is very, very young. We’ve got Kyle Blanks, Luis Durango, Tony Gwynn, Chase Headley, and Will Venable. Kyle really impressed last year. He’s a big kid with a lot of power, and I think he’s a fixture in the outfield.
Durango didn’t play much in the outfield when he was up here at the end of last year, but he can run. He caused quite the stir in San Diego after a few stunning games. If he gets on base, he’s going to get to second. Or third. I am really excited about seeing what this guy can do.
T. Gwynn’s been in the majors for a while, but I think he’s going to thrive here. It’s super exciting 🙂 Chase has been in the outfield for a couple seasons, but is still pretty young. As long as he finds his bat, I think he’ll have a great season.
And Will. I love Will. He’s a great kid, and an amazing outfielder. I really hope he sticks around on the roster for the whole season.
We’ve got a great outfield, but very young. I think we definitely need to sign a veteran guy.
Bench: I’d say that the bench is the biggest problem. Our bench has always been terrible. We’ve tried guys like Tony Clark and Cliff Floyd, but they’ve always been hurt or not that great. It’s a really tough part to play, coming off the bench late in a game all the time, but hey, it has to be done. I definitely think that we need help in this area.
So, as you can see, things are looking pretty positive. I don’t think we’re 100%, but we’re getting close. A few pieces, and I really think that we can have a great winning season.
That’s the biggest thing that we need to work on this season: winning. The second half of last season was great. I really, really loved being a fan of a winning team. It was so much fun! But that’s gotta carry over to this season. Padres fans are getting excited about this team. Things are changing for the good, and I just really hope that we’re not wrong in placing our trust in this team.
No matter what happens, it’s going to be great to have baseball back. I miss it: the sound of a well-struck ball off the bat, long summer nights listening to Ted, Andy, and Jerry, the beauty of a ball snagged by an infielder and hurled across the infield. I miss it a lot!
