Goodbye, Heath. Nice having you here.

I’ve been a Padres fan for about five years, and I’ve seen the team go from full of star players to no better than a minor league team. Those star players didn’t help out on the winning side, but the Padres were much more glamorous five years ago.

In the past five years, we’ve lost Jake Peavy, Trevor Hoffman, Kevin Kouzmanoff, Chris Young, Greg Maddux, Adrian Gonzalez, Khalil Greene, Brian Giles, Mike Adams and now finally Heath Bell.

The Padres don’t have any starpower anymore. You could probably argue for someone like Mat Latos or Nick Hundley, who have been here for a while, but they don’t have the kind of appeal Jake Peavy and Trevor Hoffman had when they were here. The organization has officially been left faceless. They have officially become a minor league team.

They’ve been playing like a minor league team long enough, and now our last real star player is gone, so that brings us down a level.

It’s so sad.

Then there’s another thing. We got rid of Mike Adams in July. Who on earth is going to close for us? At least we still have Luke Gregerson.

I say let’s bring back Trevor Hoffman. I’m sure he’s still got another season in him.

Well, Heath, we are going to miss you. Not only were you a decent closer, but you were a really entertaining guy. Best of luck with the Marlins and their strange-looking new uniforms.

GO PADRES!!

Padres FanFest 2011 :)

Yesterday was FanFest, and it was so much fun!!!

It was the getting there though, that was not fun.

IMG_0079.JPGSomeone annoyingly decided to schedule the air show on Coronado on the same day as FanFest. My family and I decided to leave our house around 8 so that we would get downtown around 9. Around 8:40 a.m., we got stuck in the worst traffic that I’ve ever seen. At 10:40, we were finally able to break free and get to our exit. The most frustrating part about it was that we were probably 1 1/2-2 miles away from our exit when we got stuck. Uggghhh.

But, we did make it with plenty of time to see all the attractions at FanFest. I really enjoyed it, but I think next year the Padres need to bring in some more features.

I was shocked at how many people there were, especially since it seemed like the whole city was heading to Coronado (there were actually 70,000 people at the air show!!!!). But there were long lines at Petco for the Garage Sale and the clubhouse tour.

I’ve been to the Garage Sale three years now, and it’s so funny to see some of the same stuff coming out every year! A lot of the old commemorative baseballs have been trying to sell for years, but I doubt  that many people are very interested in those.

I didn’t find much, but I did get a “5” patch that potentially could have been on Kouz’s jersey had he stayed with the Padres. Sniff sniff. I also bought a Western Metal Theater shirt, mostly because it was only $3.

I got Clayton Richard and Mike Adams’ autographs, which was pretty cool.

IMG_0101.JPGI got to talk to Friarhood, RJ’s Fro, Jane Mitchell, and various other fans. And of course, my Padres buddy Hyun Young. We passed out some blog cards and cupcakes and cake pops that we made ourselves. Mine got really squished, but whatever. It’s the taste that counts.

I also sat in on the Leadership Forum, which featured Dick Enberg and Tom Garfinkel. It was really interesting hearing the questions from the fans and the thoughts of both of these guys. I am especially excited about a game this year where Trevor Hoffman is going to be honored. It’s going to be sweet!!

I was super happy to get out to Petco Park again. It had been way too long, and it was so much fun to see sooo many Padres fans out there. They ended up having over 21,000 people there!!!!!

I can’t wait for baseball season to start. I have a feeling that this Padres team is going to be AMAZING.

Shoutouts!!

Today is Hyun Young’s birthday!!!! Happy birthday Padres buddy!!!! You are amazing 🙂

And, big shoutout to my sports editor and fellow Padres fan, Matt, who I assist on Palomar College’s newspaper, The Telescope. If you have any complaints about this blog, send them to him. Just kidding 🙂 And if you love Palomar sports, the Watercooler, our sports blog, is the place to find all Comets sports coverage.

GO PADRES!!!

Believe in SD!!

It was a classic pitching matchup: the veteran, Roy Oswalt, against the kid, Mat Latos.

We all knew it was going to be a huge game because this series has been hyper up to be one of the most important of the year. The Phillies came into San Diego having lost six out of their last eight. The Padres are on the top of the NL West and are definitely making a run for the playoffs. This series could be a preview of the first round of the postseason. And let me tell you, last night’s game was sooo intense, there’s no doubt that it was a preview for those playoffs.

Even though I was hyped about this series, I took the same route that the Padres themselves take: One game at a time, one series at a time. Of course we want to focus on winning the whole series, but we’re only going to get there by winning one game at a time.

Unfortunately, we didn’t do that last night. But it was still an amazing game to watch. I went to the game with my church, which was super fun. It was sooo cool to be there at the game. Right after the Phillies finished batting practice, I heard this huge roar of cheering. I thought, I really really hope that’s just a recorded cheer playing on the commercial on the scoreboard. But no. To my horror, it was the huge amount of Phillies fans in the stands. I thought, “Oh boy. We’re going to have our work cut out for us tonight.”

And we really did. It almost felt like a Dodgers/Padres games because for every play, there was cheering. When the Phillies did something good, there was a large amount of cheering. When the Padres did something good, there was a huge amount of cheering. It was so frustrating to have to battle the Phillies fans the whole time, but it also was a ton of fun.

Oswalt and Latos were great. Their linescores were actually almost identical. Oswalt went eight innings while Latos only went seven, but each gave up five hits, one run, and struck out six.

IMG_6053.JPGThe umpires bugged me a lot last night. It was pretty sad, but it seemed like they made a lot of calls in the Phillies’ favor. In the bottom of the second, we got caught stealing twice, but I’d say that they were pretty close calls. Man it was frustrating.

Latos allowed the Phillies’ first run in the top of the third. In the bottom of the third, Yorvit Torrealba led off the inning with a solo homer, which was so sweet. It was great to come right back and get that thing tied up.

Not much happened until the eighth inning. Mike Adams came in to take Latos’ place, and he did not do well. It was sooo sad!! After getting one out, he allowed a walk, single, and another walk to load the bases. Joe Thatcher came in to get the left handed, but he didn’t do his job either. He allowed a single which allowed the go-ahead run to score. It was sooo bad.

IMG_6117.JPGBut in the bottom of the ninth, I knew these boys were not going to give up. Matt Stairs started off the inning, and I thought, you’d better get a hit here. He really has not been that great this year, so it was amazing when he hit a single to start off the inning. Jerry Hairston pinched-ran for him. Eck hit a sac-bunt, and he almost almost got safely to first base because Brad Lidge fumbled the ball. Unfortunately, he recovered quickly, and Eck was out. But at least he got Jerry over to second. Miguel Tejada grounded out, which really stunk.

Then the craziness started. Adrian Gonzalez was intentionally walked. With a count of 0-2, Ryan Ludwick was hit-by-pitch to load the bases. He was hit pretty hard too. Thankfully, he was okay and the game went on.

IMG_6139.JPGChase came up next. Suddenly, I saw Jerry Hairston jumping up and down at third and pointing to the pitcher. Brad Lidge had balked!!!! Oh my goodness, it was the best moment of the whole game. It was sooooooooo exciting!! We tied the game and still had runners at second and third. Unfortunately, Chase grounded out to end the inning, but at least we kept the game going.

Heath Bell came into the game in the top of the 10th. Of course, he just had to allow a walk, but he got out of the inning unscathed.

In the bottom of the inning, we went down 1-2-3. In the top of the 11th, Heath put them down in order. We got a single in the bottom of that inning, but no avail.

Then the trouble started in the top of the 12th. Ernesto Freri came in to pitch, and I was excited because he’s done fairly well this season. But no. Last night he did not do well at all. He allowed a double to start off the inning, and there’s obviously a lot of things wrong with that. It’s a tie game, extra innings, no outs. Very bad situation. Then he allowed a single to center. Luis Durango made a very, very good throw to the plate, but Jimmy Rollins expertly slid in and Yorvit Torrealba missed the tag. It was sooooooooo sad!!!! I was seriously angry at the umpire, but looking at the replay today shows that he made the right call. Still. It was really, really bad.

We got out of that inning without any further damage. In the bottom of the 12th, after two outs, I knew that we weren’t going to win that game. But I refused to believe it. All through Will Venable’s eight-pitch at-bat, I cheered my heart out. I refused to let myself, as a fan, go down quietly. I cheered them through, but Will struck out to end the game. I was pretty frustrated, no doubt about it. But it was just one game, and I’m sure we will go out there and get them today.

It was a blast watching this game. I’m now 2-2 on the year though, so I think I’ll have to get out there again to make it a winning record.

GO FIRST-PLACE PADRES!!!

Winning A One-Hitter

highfivesallaround.jpgThis was an intense game.

Last year, Jonathan Sanchez threw a no-hitter against us. We faced him again last night, and he was almost as good as that. This time, he threw a one-hitter. And the amazing thing is, we won the game.

Mat Latos started the game for us, and he was incredible. He went seven solid innings, giving up nothing but four hits and one walk. Absolutely amazing. Let me tell you something: if we hadn’t had the stunning pitching performances like we’ve had for the past five days, we would not have won those games. Without good pitching, you don’t win. But thankfully, we’ve had incredible pitching. Wow I love these guys.

In the bottom of the fourth, Chase Headley singled (that’s our one hit). He then stole second, and a batter later, Scotty Hairston hit a sac-fly to get him in.

Chase was an essential part of this game. Hey, he’s been an essential part of this winning streak! Last night he stole three bases, got our only hit, and scored our only run. Amazing.

Most times, a very close game like this one was is a lot more intense than a game where the Padres are winning like 17-2. This was a nail-biting, and we had some seriously close calls.

Mike Adams came in to pitch in the top of the eighth and instantly got himself in trouble by giving up a lead-off triple. Gulp.

He got the next guy to ground out to third. Then he got a pop-up to Adrian. Finally, he struck out the last guy he faced. It was scary, man, but Mike got himself into that situation, and it was up to him to get out of it. It was really, really great that he was able to, but Mike? How ’bout you don’t get yourself into that situation next time in the first place? It would make things a lot easier on all of us. Thank you.

mikeadams.jpgThen my boys weren’t able to get any more runs in the bottom of the eighth, which was very scary. Heath Bell cannot handle one-run leads. It just doesn’t work with him. I would really, really appreciate it if you stopped making him go out there with only one run to work with!! It’s just to hard on my heart.

I don’t understand why on earth Heath has to make things so interesting, but for some reason, he does. He got an out, but then he put the tying run on base with a walk. What on earth?? That’s not very logical. Then he allowed a single!! I was freaking out. Thankfully, the runner stopped at third, but now you’ve got runners on first and third with only ONE out!!!

Oh man it was awful. Heath got the next batter to fly out to right field, and the runner at third stayed put. Then, the last batter was super intense. You could tell that Heath was ready to get that guy because he was sticking with his fastball and going right for the strike zone. It went called strike, swinging strike, foul, foul, and finally, swinging strike. After all those fastballs, Heath went with his curve and got John Bowker to go for it. HUGE sigh of relief here.

heathyells.jpgAs I was sitting there watching the game on Gameday, I didn’t want us to lose it. Not only would it be our fifth win in a row, and we would win the series, but we would win a game with only one hit. I think that’s pretty sweet. I was very, very relieved when Mike and Heath were able to get out of those nightmarish innings. You guys can’t do that to me!!!

All that matters though, is that we won the game. We won a game with only one hit. Of course, that’s a terrible thing, because we really need to have more hits as a team, but the story of this game is the pitching. Sanchez and Latos were incredible. Sanchez struck out ten batters. The bullpens were not perfect, but they were able to keep the other team from scoring. Overall, it was an incredible game.

Another thing I’m super excited about is that we’ve moved into first place with these Giants. YES!!! I love it when my boys are #1. I know we were in first place for a while last season, and it didn’t last very long, but it will be very interesting to see how it goes this season. How cool would it be if we stayed in first place for a very long time? I love these boys!!

The series finale against the Giants is going to be this afternoon down at Petco. It’s not a rubber game, because my boys already won the series!! HAHAHAHAHA!!! I think it would be amazing if we could sweep this series and take sole possesion of the NL West. Sound good? Let’s do it.

Jon Garland’s pitching, so he really needs to get things together. I will not be happy at all if he blows this game for us. GET IT TOGETHER JON STEVEN GARLAND!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, that’s my boys. Top of the NL West. I’m so proud to be a Padres fan right now, and I’m looking forward to some more amazing baseball.

GO PADRES!!!

Padres Sign Correia

We signed Kevin Correia to a one-year deal on Saturday, but did not get anything done with Heath Bell, Mike Adams, or Kevin Kouzmanoff…yet.

I am very glad that we will have Correia with us again this year. We signed him to a minor league deal last offseason, but he became one of our most consistent starting pitchers over the season. He became our ace when Jake Peavy was traded. It was great to have him in the rotation and I can’t wait to see what else he’ll do for us next year. Welcome back, Kevin.

correia.jpgBut now the Padres have a little work to do: sign Bell, Adams, and Kouzmanoff to contracts for next year +. These guys have just been huge for the Padres in the last few years, and it would be a crying shame to lose any of them. Hopefully, we will be able to get these guys safe and signed up by Christmas. I’m waiting in nervous anticipation for them all to get locked up. I do not want to lose any of them, and I’m probably not going to relax until they’re safely signed. Get on it, front office, and for goodness sakes, don’t trade any of them!

On a different subject, how ’bout them Chargers? They’re on an eight-game winning streak, and I really think that this is our year. I think we’re going to the Super Bowl. It’s gonna be so sweet.

Also, happy one year birthday to Perpetual Padres Saga! It’s been a lot of fun getting to know Hyun Young over the past year and being able to talk Padres with her. Be sure to head over to her blog and wish her a happy birthday!

GO PADRES!! GO CHARGERS!! GO FRONT OFFICE!! KEEP THE KOUZ!!!
