Throwing Strikes For DUMMIES

It only took ten minutes.

I switched on the radio about two hours after the game started, deciding that I should probably check the score. The first thing I heard was Cubs fans cheering and Andy Masur saying, “And there’s two more for the Cubs!”

Oh, great.

I was trying to eat lunch while listening, but 0.1 inning and six runs later, I had to turn of the radio. It was giving me indigestion. Once it was 7-1 Cubs, I was done.

But the onslaught went on without me. The Cubs pounded out 11 hits and 11 runs.

The Padres got a few runs, three to be exact. Adrian hit his 14th homer of the season, and he’s now hit at least one homer in four games straight. Man, if he wasn’t in Petco all the time…wow. This guy is now leading the majors in home runs.

“I could [not] care less,” Gonzalez said. “It wasn’t enough.”

Drew Macias hit his first homer of the year, but we only got four hits total. We were disgraced in this series, getting swept for the second straight time.

The pitching is what killed us. Chad Gaudin only went 4.1 innings, allowing four runs. Luis Perdomo gave up three, and Duaner Sanchez gave up four. Cla Meredith had a good inning, and Heath got to pitch as well, getting two strikeouts. I feel so bad for Heath.

The worst part of this game was the walks. We gave up TEN walks. Gaudin gave up SEVEN in his 4.1 innings!! These guys just couldn’t find the plate.

The Padres are back home now, after having a closed-door meeting after the game. I sure hope it worked.

Well, time to call in the Professor.

I called Greg Maddux early this morning, explaining this situation to him. He was busy golfing, but he agreed to come over and talk to the pitchers for us.

I sent all the position players to the batting cages, telling them to stay there, for say, five hours. Then all the pitchers gathered in the clubhouse as Maddux began to speak.

“It’s all about location, location, location.” he started.

“Oooooooh!” said the pitchers.

“When you pitch, you need to focus on where your pitch is going more than how fast it’s going.”

“Ahhhhhhh!”

Duaner Sanchez raised his hand. “Excuse me, sir, I’ve been having trouble understanding what exactly a strike is. Perhaps you could explain to me.”

“Of course.” Greg said, quickly drawing something on the whiteboard next to him.

mlb_strike_zone.png“You see, you want to get the ball over the plate, but not so the batter can hit it,” Maddog explained. “A lot of my success came my hitting the corners, but since you guys don’t have much control, I wouldn’t recommend that.”

Duaner rubbed his chin. “Hmmm, I think I’m finally starting to get it!”

“Good,” said GM Kevin Towers as he walked into the room. “Maybe you can work on it more when you get to Triple-A!”

Next, Greg showed the pitchers exactly how to hold the ball.

madduxpadrespose.jpgAfter Maddux talked to the pitchers for a few more hours, drilling them about where exactly the strike zone was, I walked him out to his car.

“You’ve got an interesting bunch of pitchers there.” he commented.

“Yeah, but a lot of them are probably going to be kicked out soon.” I said. “Hey, Doggie…”

He stopped, looking at me expectedly.

“You miss baseball yet? ‘Cause we could use another starting pitcher.”

He just smiled.

Well, I hope that meeting helped the pitchers realize a bit more about pitching, especially since they got it from the Professor. The Padres are back home for a nine-game homestand, starting with the apparently red-hot Reds for three. I’m scared. Aaron Harang, who scares my sister, is going tonight against Kevin Correia.

I mean, look at those eyes. They’re creepy!

aaron harang creepy.jpgBy the way, I hate Tim Sullivan’s ways to improve this team. They are plain wrong!! We must not get rid of Kouz!!!! He just needs time. We didn’t give up on him in 2007 and we can’t give up on him now. If they traded him, I would need a support group for months and months and months!! It would not be pretty.

Speaking of getting rid of players, I heard Trevor’s eighth save in eight chances yesterday. It plain broke my heart. I miss that dude sooo much!!! But you know what, I am so glad he’s on that team right now and not on the Padres. If he was here, he would be completely miserable. At least he’s on a winning team, and he’s getting to pitch. I just miss him like crazy!!

So, I am getting even more excited about Sunday’s game for one simple reason:

bronson.jpgThis gorgeous dude is pitching against Jake!!

OK, this is really weird, but I am soooo amazingly excited about seeing this guy pitch! Here’s the story.

A few years ago, Bronson Arroyo walked a Padre batter with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, and we won the game. I’m not exactly sure what he was doing pitching in the bottom of the ninth, but I know it was him. I remember him by the hair, which looked like Khalil’s.

arroyo.jpgI’m not exactly sure why I became so fascinated with him, but it was probably because the Padres did really well against him. Also, he’s really cute!

At first, I thought it was going to be Peavy-Owings this Sunday, because that’s the way the rotation had panned out, but I didn’t realize that the Reds had an off-day this week, thus pushing Arroyo to Sunday.

What a pitching match-up this is going to be! I am so ridiculously excited, it’s ridiculous!! I mean, I’m so super pumped about watching the opposing pitcher! I think all this losing is going to my head.

But seriously, I can’t wait to see Bronson. He’s amazing. Hopefully my Padres will be able to hit him, though 🙂

arroyoguitar.jpgYou know, I don’t really care that the Padres are losing so much right now. I just want to get out to the ballpark, take pictures of my boys, and watch some baseball. It’s almost guaranteed to be a great pitchers’ duel all the way. I’m going to go out there and enjoy some baseball. Who cares that the Padres are heading down the drain, that they’re a million games behind and can’t hit or pitch?

It’s going to be an amazing game, and my boys had better pull away with the win. And if they aren’t able to do that, I at least hope they can play well. I don’t want to have to walk out of there angry and frustrated and embarrased by them. If they try as hard as they can, I’d be satisfied. But they’d better win 🙂

I’m soooooo excited!! AHHH! Only a few more days….

GO PADRES!!!

#31

maddux.jpgIn the Latest Leaders yesterday, I got #31. In continuation of Jimmy’s tradition, I dedicate this ranking to #31, pitcher Greg Maddux.

When Maddux was with the Padres he wore #30, but he was #31 with some of his other teams. Maddux played in the majors for 22 years with the Cubs, Braves, Dodgers, and Padres. Known as the “professor”, Maddux relied on efficiency and accuracy, not speed. He had an incredible knowledge of how to pitch, how to get batters out. He was also a superb hitter and fielder, winning 18 Gold Gloves. He retired in December 2008.

His won-loss record is 355-227. His career ERA is 3.16, and he has 3,371 strikeouts. He was an All-Star eight times, won the NL CY Young award four times, and won a World Series. He had a wonderful career. He is currently coaching for the Padres in Spring Training.

Tomorrow…tomorrow…so exciting! The game won’t be broadcast since it’s the charity game, but I will hopefully be able to follow it on the website. But then Thursday…I will get to listen to Padres baseball! GO PADRES!!!

Spring News

jake's tatoo.jpg

There it is: Jake Peavy’s new tattoo! It’s a tribute to his American Indian heritage; he has Creek and Cherokee blood. The tattoo is a phrase, “Hoka Hey”, which means “live life to the fullest”, as well as feathers. Very interesting…

greg coach.jpgGreg Maddux was in the Padres’ camp for the first time as an instructor yesterday. It’s so funny, beacause he really looks like he belongs there. It hardly seems like he went to the Dodgers at all! I am so glad he is back with the Padres. It was really sad last year when he wasn’t able to get his 351st win for months and months. That was terrible! Then we finally shed him, and he went to a winning team. But he had a great time here in San Diego, and the guys definitely benefitted from him. It is so great that they can get that teaching again from the “professor”.

Today is the Padres’ first official team workout. So exciting! We signed outfielder Emil Brown a few days ago. That is very strange, but I think they know what they are doing. Edgar Gonzalez might not be playing in the World Baseball Classic. Scott Hairston will be playing in the WBC for the Mexico team. To look at him, you would not think he was Mexican! He’s not, but his mom was, so…

Baseball is almost here! I can’t wait…it’s been way too long 🙂

Don’t forget to keep supporting Jack Box…Hang in there Jack

Wanted: A New Owner

Not much happening baseball-wise around here. Of course, the news about the team being sold is making quite a stir. I believe Jane over at Confessions of a She-Fan is starting a collection for anyone who wants to contribute to buying them, but I’m not sure if we will be able to gather up $300+ million. I’m just hoping that we will sell the team, and that we will get a new owner who will bring a different philosophy and a different way of doing things. We need change. We need someone who can built a team but make it appealing to the fans as well. I mean, there are some great guys on the Padres team right now. Jody Gerut is a really good player, and he was so much fun to watch last year. There are all these exciting young guys who are fresh from the minors. They are great, exciting players, but the average fan won’t come out to watch rookies. He (or she) comes out to watch stars like Jake Peavy, Manny, A-Rod, you know, the big names. Obviously, the Padres are not going to get a star as big as A-Rod, because we don’t have enough money. But we need players that the fans would have heard of somewhere. An Omar Vizquel might be known. Having Greg Maddux here was great, because he’s pretty much a legend, but we had him for a fairly low price. We have about $20 million available for the rest of our roster. It is pretty scary. Jake Peavy (if he stays) and Brian Giles take up half our payroll. It’s sad. We still need a shortstop, a veteran catcher, possibly a closer (Trevor…), and more bullpen help. Oh, and more starting pitching. Can we get all we need for $20 mil???? We’ll just have to see.

Well, it rained hard all day yesterday. It was a really good rain. Today is kind of cloudy, but I think the rain is over. It was great. Christmas is in a week…

Winter Meetings News

OK, enough dwelling on the past. Baseball is hopping right now, with rumors flying like crazy.

JAKE PEAVY: There is a deal really close to being done with the Cubs and another team, most likely the Phillies. The Padres would get a lot of good players, but I still don’t want him to go. I have heard so many things, I have no idea what’s true or not. On the Padres website it looks like this thing could get done like today. But I heard on the radio that the Cubs think this is kind of getting ridiculous. If a deal’s going to get made, it’s going to be in the next 48 hours. If not, Kevin Towers has said the he will take Jake off the block, for the sake of the fans and Jake himself. So if we can get through the next 48 hours with no go, Jake will probably be our Opening Day starter. You have no idea what a relief that is to this Padres fan. We’ve been riding this since the end of the season, and we just want to keep Jake. But a deal still could get done. So we’ll just have to see.

TREVOR HOFFMAN: Trev has talked to the Mets, but with the signing of K-Rod, he won’t be going to then this year. The Indians also had some interest, but now it’s reported that they are signing Kerry Wood. So, our famous closer is still out of work. Manager Bud Black had spoken positively about getting Trevor back to San Diego, but he’s not the one who has the money. I think Trevor could come back, but it might be a little tense. I just hope he doesn’t sign with the Dodgers. Oh, no, please not the Dodgers!

GREG MADDUX: The Professor retired on Monday. He was an incredible player, a great guy. I really enjoyed having him here in San Diego. His fielding and hitting were the things that really got me. He was so good, and it was so cool to watch him. I remember when he stole the only base we stole one month. It was so cool! He was such an amazing player, and he’s going to the HOF as soon as he can. Wow, what a player!

It looks like CC has signed with the Yankees. I think there will be lots of moves today!

I want to point to two articles: One is a supplement to my game 163 entry. In March, Trevor Hoffman was on the front page of USA Today, and this article is incredible. It is one of the best I have ever read. Wow. Disappointment Aside, Hoffman Still Stands Tall

The other is this pathetic interview with Bud Black. I don’t think it was done by someone associated with MLB.com, and he doesn’t really know what he’s talking about. Plus, “Bud’s” answers don’t sound like him at all. Read the comments after you read the article. It is plain pathetic. An Interview with Bud Black

Well, that’s all for now. I may need to check in later…

A Tribute to Maddog

Greg “Maddog” Maddux was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 19th, 2008. He played for the Padres for a year and five months.

Greg, you were the master. You went out there every 5 days and did your job. You gave us so many chances to win, but we couldn’t take advantage of them. You should have had at least ten wins with us by now, and we let you down. But you didn’t care. You never thought about yourself, only the team. We Padres fans will never forget your 350th win. And I will not forget that tough night in Arizona, where you kept going, even though we didn’t have a chance to win. You took one for the team, for the bullpen. It’s hard, remembering your last start with us. You pitched like the Hall of Famer that you are. Maybe you knew that this was your last Friar start. You were spectacular, but we failed you again. Maddog, we will deeply miss your leadership and impact in the clubhouse. All the young pitchers learned so much from you. I will miss hearing your humbleness and humor in your postgame comments. I am so glad that you are with a contending team. You deserve to be in the postseason. I will be following all your starts. I wish you could have ended your career in San Diego. Thanks for all the memories and fun times. We miss you, Doggie.

The Veterans Rule

  • 1-0 Phillies

So, last night, these two teams had incredible pitching. Moyer absolutely shut us down. Maddux, who deserved 2 wins out of this game, made The Mistake, a solo homer to Pat Burrell. It wasn’t suprising that Burrell was the one who did Mad Dog in. But, of course, the Padres cannot overcome a 1 run deficit. Well, if the Padres want to be pathetic and lose 1-0, that’s their problem, not mine. The Phillies are a very good team. But this team, chock-full of hitting stars, got A run. That means our pitching was good. But then we didn’t score any runs, which means their pitching was better. We did have a few opportunities, but naturally we went down 1-2-3 after getting two runners on. Yeah, it was a pitcher’s duel, and I enjoyed it. But didn’t I say I liked a little offense with it?

We signed our first round draft pick, Allan Dykstra, last night. Tonight is the major league debuting Chad Reineke. We got him for Randy Wolf. Once again, I am really excited to see a new, young guy. I hope he does well! GO PADRES!
