It’s Déjà Vu All Over Again

How about a round of applause
A standing ovation

But you put on quite a show
Really had me going
Now it’s time to go
Curtain’s finally closing
That was quite a show
Very entertaining
But it’s over now (but it’s over now)
Go on and take a bow

The Padres started out the season wonderfully, almost unbelieveably. I enjoyed it while it was there, I thought, why not? We might not play like that in a long time. Well, turns out I was right. The Padres’ amazing start was just temporary. Now, we can’t hit, we can’t pitch, and we can’t win.

I don’t know what’s wrong with this team. The players have figured out that they haven’t been able hit, pitch, or have solid defense all at the same time. But they haven’t figured out how to fix that yet.

This weekend, we got swept in three to the Houston Astros. We could have, should have, won two of those games.

On Saturday night, we got three runs in the top of the eighth to take the lead. But Luke Gregerson got himself into some trouble in the bottom of the eighth. He was taken out in favor of Cla Meredith, who allowed two runs to score, taking away the Padres’ short-lived lead.

We should have won that game. But the bullpen blew it. It seems whenever we are hitting, really hitting, the bullpen goes out there and matches the runs scored by our boys. It’s terrible!

Yesterday, Josh Geer gave up seven runs in three innings, only five earned. Luis Perdomo gave up two runs. Edwin Moreno and Duaner Sanchez were (miraculously) scoreless, but Arturo Lopez gave up three runs in the bottom of the eighth.

But we hit three home runs. Chase Headley and Adrian Gonzalez each had a two-run shot, and Jody Gerut had a solo shot. We had nine hits, but only five runs. We should have had a lot more runs, but the Astros got some providential defense to keep the Padres from scoring. It was so sad!!

Scott Hairston threw out a runner at home, though. So the 12-5 thumping could have been worse.

After the game, Arturo Lopez was sent down to Triple-A. Yes!! The guy had a great Spring, but he just couldn’t pitch here. Drew Macias came back up. I have a feeling that he’ll be going back and forth a lot to Triple-A. Now we’re a man short in the bullpen, so the guys who are still there need to step it up. So do the starters. Kevin Towers is going to start picking these guys off, one by one, if they keep pitching like they have been.

Here’s the Union-Tribune’s headline this morning: “Houston, they have a problem; make that several.”

It’s so true. We’re pathetic right now. Today is an off-day, and it couldn’t come at a better time. We need a break. The fans need a break. The players…they need to get together, relax, go bowling or play pool or something, and figure this thing out.

I’m prepared to listen to baseball as terrible as this for the rest of the season. I’m prepared to see a loss every single day. But I don’t want to face that. I want this team to win. It’s so hard to lose. I’m prepared to do it, but I really don’t want to. I had to go through that last year. I know what it’s like.

We’ve got all the pieces. Now it’s just a matter of putting them all together. The fans are doing all they can. We’re “keeping the faith,” but that’s not going to do much if the players aren’t doing anything on the field.

The Padres better start doing something positive soon, or I’m going to have to take drastic measures…like go out to Petco Park and talk to them myself 🙂 Speaking of which, I am getting so excited about the game! I really hope I can get a few autographs and balls. We’ll have to see 🙂

We’re playing the Cubs for three games starting tomorrow before coming home to face the Reds, Giants, and Cubs. It will be good to be home for a while…I think. There had better be bigger crowds this homestand!!

What better way to start a new series than a perfect outing by Jake Peavy! But then again, we never score runs for him. Hopefully this will be one of those rare occasions, though. We need a huge outburst against the Cubbies this week!

GO PADRES!!

Me and My Gang

It’s all for one and ONE FOR ALL YA’LL
It’s a brother and a sister kinda thang

Me and my gang

Me and my gang

Today in the Latest Leaders I got #15, which is the best I have ever ranked. So, first of all, a HUGE thank you to all my readers. You guys have been amazing!!

Lately I have really grown to like Rascal Flatts. Their music is pretty amazing, and one of my favorite CDs is Me and My Gang.

me and my gang.jpg

I thought this song was kind of appropriate for the Padres. Kind of seems like a Jake Peavy song, ya know?

The Padres and their fans are on an amazing adventure right now. Hey, five-game winning streak and on top of the NL West. This season is going to be exciting, at least for a while. I think the Padres fans have been skeptical of this winning team, but more and more are coming behind them and joining the party. We don’t know where our Padres are going, but it will be so much fun to find out.

I know that I, for one, will be sticking by these Padres all year, even if Monday night was the last game we will win this year. Even if we lose Jake Peavy (oh boy), even if we don’t lose another game this year. Even if this team crashes and burns. It’s not easy, I found that out last year. But I’m going to stick by this team no matter what.

So, jump on that train, grab a hold of them reins, let’s rock this thang, cock this thang…me and my gang/Padres!!

Today, in my dedication to #15, I’m going to mention 15 members of my gang who have had superb performances in the last week.

GANG MEMBER #15

luke gregerson.jpgLuke Gregerson has been excellent this week. He’s gone five innings, giving up only three hits and that’s it. He’s been able to get out of bases-loaded-with-no-outs jams, and he’s been absolutely solid.

GANG MEMBER #14

AdrianGonzalez.jpg

Adrian Gonzalez has been warming up over the week. He has eight hits, seven RBIs, and two home runs in eight games. He’s going to be so good this year!

GANG MEMBER #13

scotthaitston.jpg

Scott Hairston is a stellar ballplayer, man. He’s been so solid this week, with some spectacular catches in center field, as well as some blast from the plate. This guy can flat-out play!

GANG MEMBER #12

luis rodriguez.jpg

Luis Rodriguez has been pretty good in the past week. He’s played in seven games, with three hits and four RBIs. But check this out: he has eight walks! Wow, that’s pretty good. But understandable since he’s been hitting low in the lineup, usually right before the pitcher.

GANG MEMBER #11

duaner sanchez.jpg

Duaner Sanchez has kind of gone under the radar, but he’s been solid for the Padres. He’s thrown three innings, allowing nothing but a walk. He came into some essential games, too, like Monday when the Padres had a one-run lead.

GANG MEMBER #10

heath camo.jpg

Heath Bell has had no problems taking over Trevor Hoffman’s job as closer on the Padres. He has four saves in four opportunities so far this season.

GANG MEMBER #9

eckstein.jpg

David Eckstein has been an excellent pickup for the Padres. He’s had some great at-bats, even though they didn’t always end up in a positive result. Still, he’s been very solid in his hitting and his defense.

GANG MEMBER #8

chase-headley.jpg

Chase Headley has been playing very well for the Padres. He has six hits and five RBIs in eight games. He also has two home runs, and great defense in left field.

GANG MEMBER #7

henry blanco catching.jpg

Henry Blanco was not signed by the Padres for his offense, but San Diego has recieved some of it anyway. In addition to catching some excellent games, Henry has two home runs already.

GANG MEMBER #6

youngcamo.jpg

Chris Young has throw 13 innings so far, allowing only two earned runs with 12 strikeouts. He has earned two wins, beating Randy Wolf and Tim Lincecum.

GANG MEMBER #5

jody homer.jpg

Jody Gerut has five hits so far, including a home run and three doubles. He’s also had stellar defense in center. It’s been so much fun to watch him…

GANG MEMBER #4

brian_giles.jpg

Brian Giles has five hits and four walks, but has not come through in a lot of big situations, like bases loaded with no outs. His defense has been superb, though. He knows that right field corner in PETCO so well!

GANG MEMBER #3

hundley throwing.jpg

Nick Hundley has definitley improved at the plate from last year. I think he’s going to have a really good offensive year. His catching has also been great.

GANG MEMBER #2

Kevin_Kouzmanoff.jpg

OH MY GOODNESS!!! That picture is soooooo cute!!! WOW, I totally love it!!!  Ah, where was I? Oh yes, Kevin Kouzmanoff’s amazingness! He has six hits so far. I think he’s still warming up. He’ll get better as the season goes on… Just look at that guy. Wow.

GANG MEMBER #1

jake dugout.jpg

Jake Peavy’s first start wasn’t the best, but his second was incredible. In 15.1 innings pitched, he has 18 strikeouts. I am so thankful that he’s still here in San Diego, and I hope he will be sticking around for a long time.

Again, thanks so much to all my readers! Without you guys, this blog has no meaning. Keep checking back here for all the latest Padres news!

Today the Padres are playing the Mets again, Kevin Correia against Oliver Perez. GO PADRES!!!

There’s Five

  • 6-5 Padres

The New York Mets opened their brand-new ballpark, Citi Field, last night. The Padres were invited to the party, and boy did they spoil it!

It all started with Jody Gerut, the Padres’ leadoff hitter, in the top of the first (which is usually a good place to start you know). With a 1-1 count, Gerut hit a solo homer down the right field line. Jody is now the only player to open a ballpark with a home run.

Walter Silva came in with a 1-0 lead. He only went 4.2 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits.

The Padres quickly build up a 5-1 lead over the Mets. In the second, Silva singled and Gerut doubled. David Eckstein then doubled them both in. Brian Giles singled in Eckstein.

In the top of the fifth, Adrian Gonzalez hit his second homer of the season. In the bottom of the frame, Silva lost it. He gave up four runs, the big blow being David Wright’s three-run homer. Suddenly, we had a tie ballgame.

Not for long, though. Luis Rodriguez tripled off of Ryan Church’s glove. A few outs later, Pedro Feliciano balked, apparently bothered by David Eckstein’s antics at the plate. That was the winning run.

Edward Mujica, Duaner Sanchez, and Edwin Moreno had great outings. They held the Mets down, that for sure. The bullpen has been so solid!

Then, it was revenge time. Well, not really. But I know that Heath Bell felt great going against his former team, who never really gave him a chance. Check out this quote from the Union Tribune, which made me laugh out loud: “Next in was Bell, who was so excited that he threw a 97-mph fastball off the backstop. No matter.” Oh my goodness! He was really excited, but he got the save, ending with a pop-up to my boy Kouz.

Heath now has four saves in four opportunities this season. He’s been good! Man, he’s certainly a lot more riled up when he goes out there, though. Trevor would never get that excited about a save!

Jody Gerut had a great game. He had two hits and a walk, plus some great defense in center. David Eckstein also had a great game, with three hits.

The bullpen was great, man. They held a one-run lead for four innings!

This team is so exciting! We are now 6-2, and we still have our lead on the top of the NL West. Now we have won five in a row. I’m loving this. My Friars are playing some great baseball right now!

Today is an off-day (in the middle of a series). I think it’s great that we get a break so everyone can recouperate after a big week. Then we can get right back into it on Wednesday with a big win!

GO PADRES!!

All Tied Up

  • 2-2 tie

Shoot, I just lost my whole entry. Oh well. Here I go again…

Well, the Padres played pretty well today. Starting pitcher Kevin Correia went the first two innings and gave up one home run. Heath Bell had a good inning, much better thatn Thursday’s. Hopefully he has found his groove. Meredith, Worrell, Britton, and Patterson each had a good inning. But in the 8th, Oneli Perez ran into Ross Gload, or rather Gload ran into one of Perez’s pitches. That tied up the game after the Padres had had a 2-1 lead for a while.

On the offensive side, the Padres did pretty well. Adrian Gonzalez drove in a run with a double. The next batter, Cliff Floyd, went first pitch (again) and drove Adrian in. Will Venable, Chad Huffman, and Jody Gerut also had a hit each. We also walked seven times.

Today Andy Masur and Ted Leitner were not on the broadcast (probably because of basketball duties), but new TV play-by-play guy Mark Neely joined Jerry Coleman to call the game. It was very interesting to hear Neely doing the play-by-play on the radio when he will usually be doing it on TV. Obvioulsy, TV and radio are very different animals, but I though Neely handed the radio very well. For his first time working with Jerry and calling Padres baseball, that is. I was impressed. He kept us up to date on the score, inning, batter, etc. It was very interesting, and it will be cool to see him working with the other Mark (Grant) this year on Channel 4.

But one thing that I am wondering about is why they are using a commercial that features calls by former Padres play-by-play guy Matt Vasgersian. Isn’t that kind of rude to Neely? Well, Mattie has been here for a long time, so maybe those were the only clips they had. But they should have used clips from the radio! Oh well. I’m sure Neely doesn’t really mind.

Tomorrow, we are playing the Cubs back in Peoria. I could hear a lot more Padres fans in the stands today, but I know there will be a ton tomorrow. Jake Peavy will pitch the first two innings, and then head out to Florida to start training for the WBC. We will miss you, Jake, but make us proud as you represent the USA. Wade LeBlanc will pitch the next two innings. GO PADRES!!

Walking Off

jake monday.jpg

  • 4-2 Padres

It was the bottom of the 9th in a 2-2 game. Scott Hairston, usually our walk-off guy, stuck out. Then Brian Giles hit an infield single and was thrown out on a bizarre play. But Luis Rodriguez singled to set up Jody Gerut. Gerut was 0-for-4. He had made a great play in center, but nothing was going at the plate. Until he saw John Rauch. Now, the Padres have hit this guy very well. Jody hasn’t be fooled, that’s for sure. It was Rauch vs. Gerut in that game with the bases loaded when Jody should have had a bases-clearing double. But Alex Romero made that spectacular catch. Jody had a homer against Rauch, and last night he completely killed the first pitch from him. WE WIN!!! I don’t think we’ll be seeing Rauch in this series again. Jake was great. 6 innings, 2 runs, 4 hits, 7 strikeouts. He threw 121 pitches, though. Clay Hensley allowed a hit, but Heath was great. Trev breezed through his inning, even though it was a tie game. Luis is really heating up. He had a double, triple, and single last night. He has also been solid at SS. We played good baseball last night. Everyone in the starting lineup (including Jake) had at least one hit, except Kouz. Giles had 3 hits. I am so glad that we got a win!

Tonight is Brandon Webb vs. Chad Reineke. GO PADRES!

…Mostly We Lose

chase homer.jpg

  • 5-3 Mets

Ah, the bases loaded with no outs. It could be one of the most exciting parts of baseball. A good or an average team will most likely score. But pathetic teams won’t. In fact, it could become a nightmare to a pathetic team. Take the Padres, for instance. They load the bases with single, single, hit batsman. They get a run on a RBI single by Adrian. But Luis Rodriguez was thrown out at the plate and Kouz grounded into a double play. Executing in a great oppurtunity? More like executing themselves. Man, every time we get the bases loaded, especially when we are losing, I am sure that we will get at least 1 run. And we did today. But if you look at this game, we needed those other runs. If you don’t take advantage of these situations, you’re going to lose. Before that inning, we had 2 hits (Chase had a homer). That top of the eighth was our biggest chance! Jody Gerut tied it at three in the 9th, but David Wright took one out to walk-off Heath Bell. Is it just me, or have we been rallying in the later innings lately? Usually they have been falling short, though. Another problem is inherited runners. They have been scoring way too many times. Everyone-the pitchers, the hitters, and the defenders- has been having problems. But we have been hitting a lot of home runs. Well, what more can I say? We have failed once again. We stink! Tomorrow is Jake vs. former Padre Glendon Rusch. No news on Brian Giles, except that he has been claimed by the Red Sox. Giles will be working with his agent and Kevin Towers in the next 24 hours or so. Go Padres!
