Rizzo didn’t make it to Opening Day, got traded to Cubs
Anthony Rizzo was traded to the Cubs today for pitcher Andrew Cashner and Minor League outfielder Kyung-Min Na.
#RizzoMania was obviously very short-lived.
I’m sure a lot of us knew that Rizzo was headed out the door, especially when the rumors were flying right after Mat Latos’ trade. I really didn’t expect him to be on the Padres’ Opening Day roster, and what do you know, he’s not going to be. Oh well.
I did get really excited when he got called up earlier in the year. I was actually bordering on Kevin Kouzmanoff-like excitement about him, but when he didn’t do that well, it wore off. He’s really young, really cute, but I think he got called up too early. He wasn’t ready for it. But we don’t have to worry about him anymore, I guess.
But something that is interesting about this trade is the fact that Rizzo is going to Chicago, where Jed Hoyer and Jed McLeod are now. McLeod was the one who drafted Rizzo to the Red Sox. Hoyer then traded Adrian Gonzalez for him last year, and now he’s bringing him to the Cubs. Hoyer obviously wants Rizzo wherever he is.
This Cashner guy is a pitcher who has started, but the Padres seem to want him as a reliever at the start. He was injured for most of last season. The Padres always seem to get a lot of those.
Hopefully this trade will work out well for the Padres, though I don’t think we got the better side of the deal.
Mat Latos to Reds, Padres get four players
NOOOOOOOOO!
Okay, he wasn’t the best pitcher, especially in the past year. But really? Really Padres front office? Why not just trade away Nick Hundley and Chase Headley while we’re at it? Why not trade away all recognizable players so we can pay to watch players whose names we do not even know?
Mat Latos was traded to the Reds today for RHPs Edinson Volquez and Brad Boxberger, INF Yonder Alonso, and C Yasmani Grandal.
At least we got something good in return.
I feel a little better now. Now that I think about it, Mat wasn’t good at all in the past year. I don’t think Mat is going to be that good next season. So we probably got the better end of the deal.
But still. It kind of stinks that the Padres are trading away so many people. Yesterday we traded Aaron Cunningham to the Indians for Cory Burns, a pitcher. The only reason I don’t like this trade is because Aaron was the last player left on the Padres who we traded Kevin Kouzmanoff away for. So essentially, that deal wasn’t worth it because none of the players we got are left on the team. Oh well.
The baseball world is abuzz with this Latos trade. Almost all of the trending topics on Twitter in the United States are about this trade. It’ll be interesting to see how things go when the season starts for the additions of both teams.

Kouz to the Rockies!
Big news: Kevin Kouzmanoff has been traded from the Oakland A’s to the Colorado Rockies!
I’m really excited for my boy. He was playing in Triple-A for the A’s, and he’s probably going to be doing the same for the Rockies, but this is a new chance for him. I’m excited for him.
Especially because he grew up in Colorado, he must be so thrilled. Even though the Rockies aren’t my favorite team, I would be so happy to have him play with them because that would mean that he’s in the majors. And I’m pretty sure he would look really hot in that purple and black.
Congrats, Kouz. You’d better be appreciated by those Colorado Rockies.
Padres play tonight in San Francisco. It’s Mat Latos vs. Matt Cain. That will be fascinating. And then tomorrow Tim Lincecum is going tomorrow against Tim Stauffer. That will be even more fascinating.

Mets top Padres in rubber game.
The Padres lost a three-game series to the Mets this afternoon, 7-3.
Despite an outstanding performance on all sides the night before (offense and pitching), the Padres weren’t able to pull through Wednesday, leaving Padres fans wondering if the season of losing would ever end.
Starter Mat Latos was solid, only making one big mistake. He threw six innings, allowing three runs with six strikeouts. All three runs came on a three-run homer to Mets third baseman David Wright in the third inning. (Wow, that’s a lot of threes.) Unfortunately, his offense wasn’t able to back him up and he got the loss, his 12th of the year.
The Padres only got three runs in the game, with two of them coming in the bottom of the ninth. Nick Hundley doubled in Aaron Cunningham with no outs, and then Alberto Gonzalez doubled in Hundley right before Jason Bartlett struck out to end the game.
But the Mets had no such problem. Angel Pagan, leading off in the lineup, had two hits and three RBIs. That, coupled with Wright’s bomb and Willie Harris’ RBI single in the eighth gave New York more than enough to win the game.
Padres fans know that the team isn’t going to go anywhere, at least not this season, but it would always be nice to have some good games during the last few months of the season, like Tuesday’s 6-1 win. But a series like this shows why the Padres are 15 games out of first place: even if they are able to have a solid game, they aren’t able to carry that momentum even to a game the very next day. Consistency, momentum, whatever you want to call it, the Padres don’t have it. And that’s why they are stuck in the cellar of the NL West.
The Padres will host the Florida Marlins for the next four games over the weekend, leading up to Trevor Hoffman’s retirement ceremony before the game on Sunday. You won’t want to miss it.

SWEEP!!
Well, what do you know.
Your San Diego Padres have won three games in a row, and they didn’t hold anything back.
We scored 35 runs. Had 40 hits. Hit five home runs, including two grand slams.
This is not the Padres we’re used to, but man, did I enjoy this weekend. It’s really great for us, but we do feel for the Pirates, since we’ve experienced so much of their pain, like the Union-Tribune article was talking about. Today we gave the Pirates their 10th straight loss. Ouch.
One thing I was really excited about today was Mat Latos’ outing. He did really well! He went seven solid innings, only allowing two runs on four hits, and those runs didn’t come until the bottom of the eighth. He also had seven strikeouts and got the win. Way to go, Mat!!
Former Padre Kevin Correia actually started for the Pirates, which I thought was funny. He only went 5.2 innings and got the loss. HA!
The sweep was a great victory, but we had a lot of bad news this week on the injury side. Chris Denorfia was put on the DL with a strained hamstring, which is really sad. Here’s a great video that shows us many reasons why losing Chris is so bad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCCKEsNMomA
Also, Chase Headley is going to be out for a few weeks with fractured left little finger. Not good. Not good…at all.

Anthony Rizzo ♥
Anthony. Rizzo. Is. Amazing.

You would not believe how excited I am about this kid. I got to watch the entirety of last night’s game on TV, which is actually very rare for me. And my goodness, I am so thankful that I got to see it all.
Anthony did not disappoint. His first at-bat ended in a called strike, but the strike zone was a little iffy all night. But in his second at-bat, he hit a triple!!!!! It was so great. His next two at-bats were walks, which was great because it showed his patience at the plate and that he’ll contribute in little ways. I was so impressed by him, in everything really: his presence on the field, his defense and plate discipline, and the way he carried himself in the countless interviews that he did. It was incredible.
I am even more excited than ever that my family and I decided to go to tonight’s game a week ago. We had no idea that we would get to see Anthony’s second major league game, but here we are. I’m just so excited to see Anthony and to see the whole team really. We had one of the best games of the year last night. We got ten hits, and really dominated the Nationals. There’s soo much energy around Padres baseball right now, I can’t wait to experience it tonight.
Speaking of which, there’d better be a ton of fans out there tonight. Last night there were only 16,000. Which is pathetic even for a normal weekday game. But I expected a lot more people to be out there to see Rizzo. It was strange. But tonight, you’ve got Party in the Park, Salute to the Negro Leagues, Fellowship Night, and Anthony Rizzo. Oh yeah, and Mat Latos too. If you can, get out to the game tonight. Yes, Rizzo is for real. Just get out there and go see him already!!
Yesterday was a good day for Padres fans. Worth trading Adrian away? Maybe. Probably. I guess we’ll have to wait and see, but I can say that I like this spark of energy. Anthony is helping to give the Padres life, and that’s something that we desperately need.
I haven’t been this excited about Padres baseball in a long time.

Latos loses again

We have no chance against our Interleague counterparts. That was proved last night as we lost 4-1 against the Seattle Mariners. Mat Latos, our so-called ace, started the game and earned his sixth loss of the year. Erik Bedard, the starter for the Mariners, threw eight innings, allowing three hits and striking out nine. Latos, on the other hand, only went six innings, allowing four runs with four strikeouts.
I don’t know what his issue is, but Mat seriously needs to get his act together. There are all sorts of explanations like being overpitched, being young and inexperienced, but no matter what’s going on, Mat needs to work through it and find something that will help him to be the ace that he was last year. This is ridiculous. We should not be sitting here three months into the season with an ace with a record of 1-6.
Ryan Ludwick has been pretty hot lately. He had two hits again last night. But that was pretty much it. We got our only run in the bottom of the ninth, just like we did the game before, which was good, but this time it didn’t work so well because we were down by four runs instead of one.
Ludwick drove in that run with a single. Congrats, Ryan. You are definitely the player of the game.
Well, Clayton Richard is going tonight against Michael Pineda. That’ll be fun.

Unlikely Heroes
Rob Johnson, Eric Patterson, Mat Latos. Not your average Home Run Derby winners.
Since the entire regular Padres lineup has had no success at anything close to hitting and scoring runs, it’s refreshing to see some unlikely guys stepping up and getting the job done. It’s almost like they were sitting there patiently while all the rest of the guys were floundering at the plate, and then when they finally got their chance, they were just like, watch how it’s done.
In last night’s game at Petco Park against the Pirates, these three guys really stepped up and helped us win a great game. We overcame two Pittsburgh leads, which was huge.
Latos started the game, and he didn’t do too badly. He actually threw a lot better than he has been lately. He went six innings, allowing only two runs on six hits with five strikeouts. And, he hit a solo home run in the third inning for our first run of the game. His average is .111.
An out later, Patterson hit a solo homer. He only had two hits in 28 at-bats before last night’s game, which was not good at all. His average this season is .133.
The Pirates scored three runs in the top of the seventh to overtake our lead of 5-2. In the bottom of the seventh, we got two runs: one on a bases loaded walk, and one on a double play.
In the bottom of the eighth, Johnson hit a solo home run to take the lead, 6-5.
Heath Bell got the save, extending his streak of straight saves to 41, which also ties Trevor Hoffman for the longest streak by a Padre.
You’re going to hear the word “unlikely” a lot about this game. And it’s definitely the best word to describe it. But if the guys who are playing every day aren’t stepping up, why shouldn’t these other guys get the big hits when we need them?
I think it was great. And I think that these guys deserve a little more playing time.
So, the series is tied. I think it would be huge if we were able to get the win today for the series win. We seriously need it. And we get to face our old friend Kevin Correia, who has a record of 4-2. It’s going to be fun.

Time to get winning…
We lost again. Okay, I guess we did win two games before that. But then we couldn’t overcome a one-run lead at the end of the game last night.
First of all, Aaron Harang allowed four runs in the top of the first, which was instant doom for us. There’s no way that we can overcome four runs, especially when it comes so early in the game.
Granted, we were able to get three runs throughout the game, which was an accomplishment, but we weren’t able to get just one more to tie it. Jorge Cantu hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning for our first two runs, and then Ryan Ludwick singled in Will Venable in the bottom of the eighth for our third run. But of course, we left seven runners on and were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
Currently, we are in last place in the NL West with a record of 11-18 and we’re 7.5 games behind. It is lovely.
Latos is pitching tonight, which is worrying because he has not been good. Not been good at all. I really really hope that he can find his pitching mechanics ASAP, because we have enough to worry about without having to worry about our star pitcher.

The Return of Latos
Mat Latos is back, and though he wasn’t entirely on his game, at least he’s pitching. I think that’s a good start.
Mat went six innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Not to bad at all, but he did pile up the pitch count pretty quickly. He finished up with 94 pitches.
On the other side, Reds starter Edinson Volquez helped us out in the first inning. He was pretty erratic. He allowed two singles, then a walk, and then he hit Ryan Ludwick to drive in our first run. Brad Hawpe gave us a sacrifice fly for the second run.
The Reds pulled ahead in the fourth and fifth innings. Chris Heisey hit a two-run homer in the fifth.
After Latos left, Ernesto Frieri came in to pitch. He threw 1.1 innings, only allowing one hit and one walk with three strikeouts.
We lost 3-2. It stunk. We just didn’t capitalize on the situations that we had.
Our hitting is still not looking that great. Not only that, but our baserunning was not helping us either. We had two people caught stealing, which easily killed some run-scoring opportunities.
Will Venable, leading off, went 2-for-3 with a run scored, which was great. But he also was one of the guys who got caught stealing.
We are now 4-5. I really hope we get things back together.
I’m going to tomorrow’s game, which I’m really excited about it. It’ll be a lot of fun to get out and to actually see how the team is doing myself. Hopefully they’ll give me a good game.
