Adrian, T. Gwynn, and Jane Mitchell
So Adrian’s deal is just about done. I am very sad 😦 He had a physical today in Boston, and all that’s left to do is release an official announcement. But from what it looks like, we’re only going to get three minor league players. I don’t like that at all. Sure, they’re top prospects, but with losing Adrian, we need players who will be able to help us right now.
Very sad day for all Padres fans. I hope all of you are doing okay, but I know it’s going to take us a while to deal with anger and the hurt. Oh well. Hoyer thinks that this is the best for the club, so I guess we need to trust him.
I love Adrian. At least he’s going to the Red Sox, and not the Yankees.
Today was pretty sad, but one thing that cheered me up was a grand opening for a new Cox Solutions store in Escondido, featuring Tony Gwynn Jr. and Jane Mitchell!
I seriously had so much fun. There was a ton of great free stuff, which I was really glad to get. Plus I got Tony’s autograph and a picture with him, which was super cool.
I also got to meet Jane Mitchell and get a free copy of her beautiful new book, One on One: My Journey with Hall of Famers, Fan Favorites, and Rising Stars.
She was sooo nice, and I’m super excited about reading the book, especially the section about Kevin Kouzmanoff. Jane does something very unique, and I’m really excited about leaning more about her and her career, especially since she’s a female in a man’s world, just like I want to be.
So that was a lot of fun. I’m so glad that I was able to go 🙂

The End for Adrian?
So, the Red Sox and the Padres are talking about an Adrian Gonzalez deal right now, and it looks pretty serious. I am not okay with letting Adrian go.
I know that this was inevitable, Adrian leaving, but I still don’t want it to happen. Even if you don’t know anything about Padres baseball, you’ll know that Adrian Gonzalez plays for us because he’s the face of the team. He’s the only one left. First we got rid of Jake Peavy, than Trevor, and now it looks like Adrian’s out the door. Of course, we still have Heath Bell, but you can’t base an organization’s face around the closer. I don’t think it really works.
I’m just going to say that if Adrian gets traded, the Padres as a business are going to suffer. Unless we get someone the caliber of Josh Beckett or David Ortiz in return, I believe that the fanbase will shrink considerably. I know that even aquiring Aaron Harang has turned my sister off completely to the Padres, but trading Adrian Gonzalez…for the average fan, who on earth do you go to a Padres game to watch?
I do have to admit that I would love to get Jacoby Ellsbury here. I love that guy. And going to the Red Sox isn’t the worst thing for a player like Adrian to do. At least it’s not the Yankees. But losing a guy like Adrian…man. Hometown boy, long-time player, face of the franchise…I don’t really see how trading him is going to benefit you.
Okay, I know that if we do trade him, we’re going to get a lot in return. A lot. But I think the Padres are still going to take a huge blow.
I hate losing players. I hate losing guys who have helped us so much and in so many ways. Adrian’s just been incredible for us, and I really don’t want to lose him.
Adrian Gonzalez is my 8-year-old brother’s favorite player. He loves playing baseball. He loves pretending to be Adrian Gonzalez. I don’t have the heart to tell him that his favorite player is about to be traded. And I know that my little brother isn’t the only kid in this city who loves Adrian. Kids look up to this guy. It’s going to be pretty tough for a lot of them.
Well, it’s a good thing that the Red Sox are my second favorite team.
I love you, Adrian. Thank you for everything.

Not Too Interested
I feel really terrible about my neglect of the blog. It’s been like a week since I last blogged. But seriously, there is nothing to write about. Or maybe there is, but I’m just not motivated. Like, at all. It’s not good, I know.
But seriously, the World Series is really not interesting me at all. Sure, I want the Phillies to win (GO PHILLIES!), but I just don’t have any stakes with either team. You know, if it was Red Sox-Phillies, I would be a little more excited, but still. It’s not my team.
And I really don’t like the Yankees. I don’t like having the Yankees in the World Series. And I don’t like all these calls that are going for the Yankees. It’s not cool. The Yankees already have a bazzilion World Series, and they really don’t need another one. It’s like, oh, the Yankees are in the World Series…again. Whatever. You know, some teams haven’t even been there. There are a few teams that are dying to win a championship like that, but they can’t because the Yankees are stealing all the money. So frustrating. There are days that I hate being a fan of such a low-budget team who has to watch all the big mean money machines win all the time. It’s really really sad.

National League Champions
Congrats to the Philadelphia Phillies on their second straight National League title!
I don’t care that they’re an NL East team. I certainly wasn’t going to cheer for the Dodgers during this series! Isn’t this exciting? When was the last time we had team win two World Series in a row? Not going to be easy, but man, the Phillies have been good.
Looks like the Yankees are going to take the ALCS, but who knows, maybe the Angels will be able to make a comeback here. GO ANGELS!
So the Padres re-signed their entire coaching staff for next year. All the guys who have pretty much been here for years are back again. And Randy Ready for pitching coach. Let’s see if 1, he’ll stay with us instead of getting hired for the Astros’ manager, and 2, if he’ll be able to last a whole season as pitching coach of the Padres. In recent years it hasn’t been able to be done, but maybe Randy will have better luck.
And it looks like Red Sox assistant general manager Jed Hoyer will soon be general manager for the Padres. Seems like he’s the leading choice here, and Jeff Moorad wanted a new GM by the beginning of the World Series, which is in about six days.
Thinking about the general manager situation today, I kind of felt like we’re in a Animal Farm thing here. You know, the animals get rid of the farmer thinking that things will be better without him. But in the end, things really are a lot worse than they were before. I really hope we’re not getting into that situation. I’m still not sure if getting rid of Kevin Towers was the right thing to do. It’s good to have change. The fans are excited about the changes in leadership. But what if it’s not as good as we thought it would be? What if it gets worse? Well, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Hopefully things will turn out a lot better than they have been.

Heartbreaking
Oh, Jonathan…I feel you man.
It wasn’t too long ago when a star closer for the Padres blew a chance that would have sent them to the playoffs. Two chances, actually. It hurts. To have that huge hope that we’re going to do this, we’re going to get there, and our amazing closer is going out there to shut them down, and then, three hits later, it’s all over. The hope is painfully dashed to the ground. Shock settles in. Tears fill your eyes. We had it. It was right there in our hands. We could feel it. It was there. We were one strike away.
It’s hard. Pap’s going to have to relive that moment for the rest of the postseason. He’s going to go through a lot of guilt, a lot of regret. He’s going to analyze those moments over and over again. So are the fans. It’s heartbreaking, it really is.
Though I’m not as die-hard as I could be towards the Red Sox, I feel the pain. I was pulling for this team too. I don’t know what went wrong, but there was definitely something not right with this team. They got swept in three games. That’s not good. Not good at all.
One team rejoices as the other is filled with grief. One city is estatic while the other is quiet, sadly reflecting on the end of a season. One city looks forward to the next game, the next week, while the other looks forward to redemption, seemingly so far away.
It’s not easy. But that’s baseball: it was made to break your heart.
Here’s hoping that all you Red Sox fans out there will see the hope of next year. Teams like the Padres live on “next year.” Next year, is hope.

Come On Guys!!
Last night’s game between the Red Sox and and Angels was not good, man. Not good at all. The Sox got shut out in a 5-0 loss. Jon Lester allowed three runs in six innings, and Ramon Ramirez allowed two. The offense only had four hits and they committed three errors! Ergh. It was not good. Not the greatest way to start off the playoffs, but hey. We’ve seen this team work miracles before. I should not start panicking, but I really don’t want to have to cheer for any other team than the Red Sox this postseason.
Come on, guys, keep your heads up. You’ll get them today.
Josh Beckett is pitching, and we all know how incredible he’s been in the postseason. Let’s hope that he’ll be able to even things up for the Red Sox tonight.
The Dodgers won again last night, which is very frustrating. Get it going, St. Louis!!
When I opened up the newspaper yesterday morning, I found some very perplexing news. Marcus Giles was arrested because his wife said he had assulted her.
Oh boy. Before the season started, I blogged a little about Brian Giles’ situation. His ex-girlfriend accused him of abusing her, and there was a whole mess of that situation. Brian countered that she had abused him, and it was pretty crazy. Brian barely played at all for us this season, and it’s extremely likely that this was his last season in a Padres uniform.
Now, Marcus is getting into it! I almost can’t believe it. He’s been married for quite a while, and they have three little girls. This is just crazy!
Marcus played for one season with the Padres, and I loved him. He got to play with his brother and all that, plus he played pretty well for us. The Padres relased him after that season, though, and he hasn’t played in the majors since. Oh dear.
Well, the Padres made a few moves yesterday, nothing too exciting. Cha Sueng Baek, Cliff Floyd, and Shawn Hill were waived. All three were fails this year. Baek was supposed to be a big part of our rotation, but he got hurt and was out all year. Pretty much the same story for the other two dudes. We actually had a lot of guys who that happened to before the season. It was not good. Like Mark Worrell, one of the pieces in the Khalil Greene trade, the side-armer. The Padres really liked what they were seeing…and then he had to have Tommy John surgery. So much for him.
We’ve got some exciting postseason baseball going on right now. Wow, it’s been amazing! Hope you all are having a lot of fun watching it 🙂

It’s Over
On Sunday, the San Diego Padres’ 2009 season came to an end. My boys’ record was 75-87, 20 games behind in the NL West. They ended with a sad loss to the Giants, but this season on the whole was not a loss. Some amazing things happened here in San Diego, and it’s definitely going to be a season to remember.
I can’t believe it’s really over, man. Over the last two months of the season, I was so busy that I wasn’t able to listen to as many Padres games as I would have wanted to. Now I can’t listen to any Padres baseball until March. It’s kind of sad. It was really weird for me to be able to just sit there and listen to the game on Sunday. It had been a long time since I had been able to sit down and really listen to a game. I love listening to the games. It’s kind of sad that it’s over.
Our season ended when Kevin Kouzmanoff struck out in the bottom of the tenth with two runners on. It was a long, crazy game. The Giants took an early lead, 3-0. We didn’t score until the bottom of the sixth. David Eckstein came up with a runner on. He hit his second homer of the year to pull us within one run. Eck is obviously not a home run hitter, but his value to this team in unmeasurable. You don’t see it in his numbers, but he’s been just incredible this year. I don’t think this team would have the postitive outlook on next year that we have if we didn’t have David Eckstein. He’s brought so much to this team! Both of his homers were in essential situations this year. His first was against the Mets in the bottom of the ninth. We had two runners on, but two outs. I think we were down to our last strike, trailing by three runs. Suddenly, Eck hit a three-run homer to tie the game. Even thought we lost the game later, that was just huge. The one on Sunday was pretty much the same.
We tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch by Randy Johnson. Unfortunately, neither team was able to get anything until the top of the tenth.
Earlier in the game, the Padres had intentionally walked Pablo Sandoval in a situation when the Giants could have scored. But for some terrible reason, they didn’t walk him in the top of the ninth. It cost them their season. Sandoval hit a solo homer, and the Padres were unable to capitalize in the bottom of the inning. Thus ended the Padres’ 2009 season.
It was kind of frustrating that we ended the season on such a bad note. I mean, we won practically every series in the month of September, and we just had to go and lose to the Giants. It puts a sour taste on the season to end like that, you know? We could have at least won the last game! Oh well. What’s done is done.
It’s going to be a really interesting offseason for the Padres as changes are made. The changes actually started before the end of the season, when General Manager Kevin Towers was fired on Friday. I’m still not sure what I think about that. KT was an incredible GM. He made a lot of great deals. He got us Trevor Hoffman, he drafted Jake Peavy, he got Adrian and CY in a very lopsided trade, and he even got a treadmill for a catcher once! But then, of course, we have to look at the negatives. We only won four titles under him. We only got to one World Series. His number one draft picks all ended up terribly. He kicked Trevor out, he traded Jake away. He’s an expert at making a team with very little money. But what I think it comes down to is the championships. Sure, he built some great teams, but he didn’t get them to the Big Show. Thanks for all the years, KT.
Trevor Hoffman re-signed with the Brewers yesterday. How rude. Trevor’s got 591 saves now. Oh my. I just thought of something very sad. He’s going to get his 600th with the Brewers! Aw man. I miss him, I really do. It kills me that he’s going to get such a big milestone with the Brewers. TREVOR!!!!
Now I need to talk about my dear Kouz, who has had an outstanding season. He only had three errors in 309 chances. That’s a .990 fielding percentage! Incredible. So incredible, in fact, that the Hall of Fame has asked him for a glove that he used during the season. He said he won’t give them his “gamer,” but they will be getting a glove that he used in this amazing season. Will he win a Gold Glove? Probably not, but I think he’s starting to get some notice around baseball. This dude is incredible, people. Believe me, I know 🙂 Love you Koozie!!
Well, we’ve got a big playoff game tonight. A Game 163, to be exact, between the Twins and the Tigers. I can’t believe that there have been three of those in three years! That’s amazing. I feel bad for you Twins and Tigers fans ’cause these games are so stressing. Just make sure you dude touches the plate in the bottom of the thirteenth, and everthing will be good…
I’m wearing my Red Sox shirt today, and I’m ready for these playoffs to start. It’s going to be great!! I can’t wait.

Rays: American League Champions
The Rays did it. Hats off to them. After Boston’s miraculous rally on Thursday, and their win on Saturday, the Rays’ pitching easily controlled game 7.
Matt Garza was spectacular. 7 innings, 2 hits, 1 run, 3 walks, 9 strikeouts. He held the Red Sox down. The only run was a solo homer fron Dustin Pedroia. This guy is amazing. He has a great arm at second, plus a wonderful bat. Anyway, after Garza, the Rays’ bullpen kicked in. It took 4 relievers in the 8th inning, but they got their goal done: preventing Boston to score when they had the bases loaded. It worked, as Boston left 8 runners on in the game. They certainly had their chances, but they were not able to get that clutch knock. On the pitching side, Jon Lester was not bad. He gave up only 3 runs, but it was enough to beat Boston.
The Red Sox really grew on me this postseason, and it was sad to see them lose like that. I’m used to that heartbreak because of the Padres. But just because I’m used to it doesn’t mean it’s easy. Losses in big games like that hurt. In the Padres case, they were constantly leaving the potential tying or winning runs on base. But they never got that clutch hit and so they lost. That’s a huge part of why we had 99 losses this year.
But how ’bout those Rays? They were nothing before this year and now they’re in the World Series. It’s pretty incredible. But I don’t think I’ll be able to root for them in the WS. I’ve been rooting against them for the last 7 games, and believe me, it’s not easy to flip around and immediately cheer for them. I think it would take a long time before a Red Sox fan could root for the Rays.
We’ll have to see how this goes. It will be very interesting. I’m not going to pick a team to win (I mean, Tampa Bay beat the Boston Red Sox and the Phillies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers for goodness sakes!!), but I will be rooting for Philly. So, GO PHILLIES!
Red Sox: Never Say Die
I realized why I love the Red Sox last night: they’re THE comeback team, the very picture of “never say die”. They’re unbelievable. But they’re the real deal. This team is simply incredible.
It was a wild and wooly game, no doubt. Dice-K got hit early with a 2-run homer from the red-hot B.J. Upton. Then in the third, Carlos Pena hit a 2-runner followed by a solo shot from Evan Longoria. Thing were not looking good for the Sox in this do-or-die game, and it got even worse. Pena added to the problems with a 2-run double off Jonathan Paplebon. Going into the bottom of the 7th, it was a 7-0 game. Jed Lowrie started the inning with a double. After 2 flyouts, Coco Crisp singled to sent Lowrie to third. Dustin Pedroia singled in Boston’s first run. Then David Ortiz came to the plate. The announcers were just explaining his slump of 61 ABs without a homer when BANG! Ortiz hits a tremendous three-runner to right. It’s now 7-4 Rays. In the bottom of the eighth, Jason Bay walked to set up J.D. Drew. Drew hit a bomb to bring the Sox within a run. 2 outs later, Mark Kotsay doubled. Crisp singled, Kotsay scored, Crisp tried to take second but was tagged out. But the tying run scored. Justin Masterson threw a good top 9th. In the bottom of the 9th, two quick outs were made. It seemed as if the game would go to extras when Kevin Youkilis hit a ground ball to Longoria. The third baseman made a great scoop, but his throw to first missed, bounced up, and sailed over the first baseman’s mitt. Youkilis to second. Bay was intentionally walked for Drew. Drew slammed a single to right, sending in the winning run. It was amazing.
This game was fantastic. I’m running out of adjectives here, but it is worth every one of them. I mean, the game did not look promising for the Sox at all in the beginning. Dice-K was struggling, and they were getting down early. They left a bunch of runners on base, weren’t getting key hits. It reminded me of the Padres! But when they did start coming back, they were doing almost everything with two outs. I could hardly believe what was going on right in front of my eyes. I was sort of resigning to the fact that the Rays were going to win, mostly because of the announcers (ahem!), who were talking as if the Rays had already won. (Of course, their colors changed when the Sox came back.) I wasn’t really giving up on them, but I was preparing myself for a loss. But then they rallied back, and I was super excited. I’m actually in Arizona right now on vacation, and I was in the hotel room, pumping my fist, trying not to scream too loud. It was so amazing that it was funny. I enjoyed that game so much. People are going to talk about it for days.
Now the Red Sox have a second chance. They’re going to play another game tomorrow night at Tampa, and they’re throwing Josh Beckett against James Shields. Now the question is, what can’t this team do? They’ve come back to win the World Series twice after being down 3-0 or 3-1. They’ve started it this year. Tampa’s leading by 3 games to 2, but we must wonder how safe that lead is. With this Boston team, nothing is impossible.
